Is Network Address Translation (NAT), desirable (security-wise), in a modem/router ?

Is the Network Address Translation (NAT) feature, desirable (security-wise), in a modem/router ?

I know-enough, to try to turn-off the port-forwarding feature, but if a user is able to do that, is NAT, still desireable ?

NAT is how you communicate with the Internet behind a router or virtual machine's firewall.  If you disable it entirely, then you will be breaking through the router's firewall and exposing all of your networked devices ports directly to the Internet.  Is that what you are seeking to do?
