My husband and I received an iphone 5 from our son at Christmas. It was from Sprint. We are with Verizon and apparently we can't add it to our Verizon account. My husband is due for an upgrade from a flip phone. So can we do anything with this hand-me-down phone or do we just donate it to someone already on Sprint?

Sprint and Verizon use incompatible versions of the CDMA cell phone networking, and both are incompatible with the GSM networks like AT&T.  You could activate the iPhone through a contract-free provider which uses the Sprint network, such as Boost Mobile or Ting (ting.com) which would give you an extra phone, but also an extra bill for that phone.
