Blockchain Architecture

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a reference to a description of the architecture of a blockchain database? I am familiar with the structure of other database systems, such as keyed, direct access, Hierarchical, and relational but have not found any supporting literature about blockchain.

Strictly speaking, blockchain is NOT a database as such. By this I mean you can store random data and retrieve that data at a later time by the proper query.  Blockchain data are used to encrypt crypto-currency such as Bitcoin and to provide an audit chain so that the data may not be altered retroactively, by having multiple computers in the chain storing the data.  The way I understand it, the blockchain is added on top of a more traditional network database to provide that protection from retroactive alteration.
